Check If Your iPhone Battery Needs Replacement

The iPhone 11 Pro Max, which was released late last year as part of the iPhone 11 series, has the longest battery life we’ve seen on an iPhone so far. It boasts of a 3969 mAh battery that can last up to 12 hours. The iPhone 11 Pro’s 3190 mAh lasts a little over 10 hours while iPhone 11’s 3046 mAh battery can be used for up to 11 hours.

But no matter how big the battery capacity is and how long the iPhone’s battery life lasts, there will come a time when you need to replace it. The period of battery deterioration varies depending on individual use, the battery capacity of the device, and the iPhone model. Older phones are expected to lose battery juice much faster than newer iPhones. And the more the use your device, the faster the battery drains.

Over time, any battery, including your iPhone’s battery, will eventually begin to lose its capacity to hold a decent charge. You might notice that your iPhone battery does last as long as it did before — and you are not alone on this. This scenario is normal for all rechargeable batteries. As your iPhone battery gets older, it becomes less efficient, requires more frequent charging, doesn’t hold charge longer, or suddenly shuts down due to lack of power.

Once the iPhone surpasses 500 charges, then that is a good time to get it replaced. But unless you’re counting every time you charge, there is no way to monitor when you’ve reached the 500 marks. Fortunately, Apple has devised other ways to track your battery’s health and let you know when to replace it.

In 2017, a lot of iPhone users complained that their devices slowed down a lot even when on full-charge. Apple has later admitted that they introduced a CPU-capping feature to devices running iOS 11.2 and later. According to Apple, this feature scales down the CPU processing of older iPhones to save on battery life. Nonetheless, this move has irritated a good number of iPhone users, prompting Apple to offer battery replacements for a minimal cost.

With the release of iOS 13, another battery issue has popped up and a lot of iPhone users are frustrated over excessive battery drainage after upgrading to the newest iOS, particularly iOS 13.1.2 and 13.1.3. According to reports, the new iOS causes a 25% to 30% battery drain every hour even when the device is not in use. Apple has not released an announcement regarding the official fix but some users noted an improvement in battery life after installing iOS 13.2.3.

How to Check Your iPhone’s Battery Health

Before 2018, finding out the wear of the iPhone battery is a guessing game. There’s no way of telling when a battery has degraded enough that it needs to be replaced. When Apple was accused of slowing down older iPhones to save on battery life, which the company also admitted to, the iPhone manufacturer volunteered to release a feature to make it easier for users to access battery information. This feature is called Battery Health.

To know your iPhone battery’s status, just tap Settings > Battery > Battery Health.

Under Maximum Capacity, you will see the percentage of remaining battery capacity compared to when it was new. If the Maximum Capacity is 80% or higher, then you still have a good battery life. Otherwise, you will need to consider replacing it soon.

Another factor you need to look at is the Peak Performance Capability. If you see “Your battery is currently supporting normal peak performance,” then your battery should still be in good condition. You will need to replace your battery when you see a notification saying: “Your iPhone battery may need to be serviced.”

If you are using an iPhone running an older version of the iOS and without the Battery Health feature, you can check your battery’s status using an app called Battery Life by RBT Digital. This app shows you a graph displaying the iPhone battery’s wear level. Another option is to plug it into your Mac and check the charge cycles using the coconutBattery app. Look at the cycle count to check whether it has reached the 500-mark, which is Apple’s estimated lifespan of an iPhone battery.

How to Check Which Apps Are Draining Your Battery

A good way to understand your battery health is to take a look at which apps are running and consuming your resources. Fortunately, iOS 12 has made it more convenient to track down misbehaving apps by checking out the Battery Usage. This tool lists down which apps have been running for the past 24 hours or the last 10 days.

To access Battery Usage, tap Settings > Battery. Scroll down to Battery Usage by App to see which apps have been running and how much power they are consuming. In the example below, we can see that Netflix is eating 50% of battery usage, which is pretty high. If you see this percentage and you’ve not been using Netflix recently, then there is something wrong with the app or its settings.

Tips to Maximize iPhone Battery Life

We all want our battery to last as long as possible, not just to make the most out of it but also to avoid the cost of getting it replaced or buying a new unit. Here are some suggestions to help you save battery life on your iPhone:

1. Reduce background activity

On-screen battery usage is easy to manage because you just need to reduce the time you use the app to save on battery. Background usage, on the other hand, is a lot more complicated. You might want to leave some apps, like emails, messaging apps, and social media apps, running in the background to get you alerted of new activities. But do you need YouTube, the Apple Store, or Keynote to be running all the time? Though minimal, the battery drain caused by these unnecessary apps running in the background can also contribute to the deterioration of your battery health.

What you can do is turn off some of the background apps that you don’t need to be updated with. To do this:

  • Tap Settings on your home screen, then tap on General.
  • Tap on Background App Refresh, then turn off the apps that don’t need to be updated all the time.

2. Turn off Location Services

Location requests can also cause some significant drain to your battery, especially if all of your apps are using it. To prevent all your apps from using Location Services all the time, you can turn them off by app by following the instructions below:

  • On your home screen, tap Settings > Privacy.
  • Tap on Location Services.
  • Scroll down to the app you want to change.
  • Choose between Never to disable location access or While Using the App to grant access only when the app is being used.
  • Do this for all the apps you want to edit.

3. Adjust screen brightness

Setting your phone’s display to the brightest level consumes more battery so you might want to consider adjusting the screen brightness. You can go to Settings > Display & Brightness and drag the slider until you achieve the brightness level that you want. Or you can swipe up your home screen to reveal the quick settings, then tap on the screen brightness icon to adjust it.

If you don’t want to adjust your screen brightness every time your environment changes, you can turn on Auto-brightness from Settings.

4. Switch off Raise to Wake feature.

One of the features included in iOS 10.3 and later versions is the Raise to Wake option. This feature allows a user to unlock the device by moving it or swing his or her hand. Doing these gestures often means that your phone will be constantly locking and unlocking, which will drain your battery faster. If you don’t want to use gestures to unlock your iPhone, you can turn off this feature by going to Settings > Display & Brightness, then switch off Raise to Wake.

5. Clean up your iPhone.

Junk files accumulate on your device over time. Doing housekeeping from time to time can help prevent issues and prolong your battery life. You can plug your iPhone into your Mac and use a Mac cleaning software to get rid of all junk files and optimize your phone’s performance. Once you’ve cleaned up your system, you’ll notice an improvement in performance and battery life.

6. Use Low Power Mode.

Most iPhone users encounter the Low Power Mode only when the device is low on battery. But this mode can also be turned on even when you have enough charge. This mode allows your iPhone to operate in a low power state to prolong battery life. When your phone is running low on power, iOS automatically prompts you to switch to Low Power Mode.

If you want to use this mode manually, go to Settings > Battery, then switch on Low Power Mode.

7. Use Airplane Mode.

Another way to save battery life on your iPhone is to turn on Airplane mode when you don’t need to use the internet or don’t need to call someone. It also saves your phone from constantly looking for a cell signal when you are in areas with poor reception. There are two ways you can switch on this feature. First, you can go to Settings > Airplane mode, then toggle the switch to turn it on. The other option is to bring up the Control Center by swiping the home screen up, then tap the Airplane Mode icon there.
